James Pollock's home state was and still is South Dakota. At the time of
his selection to US Army Combat Artist Team IV he was serving as a Sp/4
postal clerk with First Base Post Office, 8th US Army, and was stationed
at Camp Ames near Taejon, South Korea. All artwork completed as a soldier
artist are in the Military History War Art Collection in Washington D.C.
After being selected through army-wide competition, the following letter
orders were issued 27 July 1967 authorizing James Pollock to participate
as a member of US Army Combat Artist Team IV in Vienam as well as Category
Z Air Travel and Military Air Travel. All team members had similar orders.
Multiple copies of these orders were distributed and carried with team members
at all times. All in-country travel in Vietnam was accomplished using these
orders. Pollock's orders were issued from Headquarters, 20th General Support
Group, US Army ASCOM District, APO San Francisco 96220.

while in Hawaii. Indiv must havein poss basic req summer unif, work unif
& cbt boots. Plague immun req but tvl WNB delayed except for 1st vaccine
dose. Bording pass DA Form 1472 will be reequ for MAC flight overseas. Indiv
WB equip w/m17 protective mask & corr lenses if nec prior to dprt this
comd. ID tags WB worn while tvl by mil acft. Indiv w/have cy of immun rec
& valid ID card in poss at all times. Bag alw 66 lbs; personal eff,
and an ex bag alw of 30 lbs for art supplies and technical equip. Combat
pay of $65.00 per month will be auth while on duty in Vienam. Per diem will
be in accord with JTR.
