Seth
Bullock's Ghost
General Custer's 1874 expedition to
the Black Hills reported "gold in the grass roots." The race was
on. Prospectors, gamblers, and fortune hunters flocked to the
Black Hills in search of the mother lode. Deadwood was one of the
mining camps that sprang up during this period. It was a wild and
lawless town.
One of those coming to the Hills during this period was Seth
Bullock. He arrived in 1876 with his partner, Sol Star.
They opened up a successful hardware business catering to the needs of
the miners and others in the camp. Eventually, they bought a lot
on the corner of Main and Wall streets -- the future site of the
Bullock Hotel.
Bullock found himself appointed sheriff of Deadwood and was reported to
"have a stare that could stop a gunfight." Law and order had come
to Deadwood.
Bullock died in September of 1919 in the Bullock Hotel. He was
buried in Mt. Moriah at the top of the trail leading up out of the
cemetary. His gravesite provided a view of Mt. Roosevelt across
the gulch. Mt. Roosevelt is named in honor of Teddy Roosevelt, a
close friend of Bullock's. Bullock's grave is located above Mt.
Moriah. A hike up a dirt road will lead you to the gravesite.
But the story doesn't end there....
All types of paranormal activity have been reported at the Bullock
Hotel over the years. The reports have come from guests and hotel
employees alike.
Plates and glasses have been known to shake and fly off the tables in
the restaurant. Lights turn off and on by themselves, objects
move untouched, shower curtains opening and closing by
themselves. People have heard their name whispered by an unseen
male voice. Others have heard whistling in the empty hallways and
the sounds of boots with spurs walking across the floors. Broken
clocks suddenly chime the time and mysterious cloudy images have been
noted in photographs taken within the hotel.
One of the most widely circulated stories of Bullock's ghost involves a
young boy staying at the hotel with his parents. The boy wandered
away from his parents and became lost. While walking around the
hotel crying, the boy came in contact with a cowboy. The man
calmed the child and helped him back to his room. When the family
checked out of the hotel the next day, the boy pointed to a photo of a
man hanging on the wall. He identified the man as the one who had
helped him the night before.
It was a photo of Seth Bullock.
