C. scutellaris scutellaris is sometimes common in sand dune habitats. Another subspecies, C. scutellaris lecontei (not pictured) occurs in the southeast portion of the state, mostly on sand bars and sandy beaches of the Missouri River. This is a spring-fall species. C. scutellaris scutellaris is one of our most colorful species.
