Black morph C. purpurea
Cicindela purpurea is locally common in western South Dakota but can be found statewide. This species seems to prefer relatively undisturbed grassland habitats with bare ground. It is often found along cow trails and dirt roads. A black morph is present in most populations, but black morph individuals usually constitute <10% of the population. C. purpurea is a spring-fall species, we have collected specimens as early as March 19.
