Sprague's Pipits
Fort Pierre National Grassland

During fall migration a few Sprague's Pipits can usually be found on the Fort Pierre National Grassland. Today, I saw more Sprague's Pipits on one prairie dog town than I've seen in the last 4 or 5 years combined. This prairie dog town is located about a mile SW of Richland Dam, on FS Road 224. It was difficult to accurately count pipits, but I feel confident in saying that there were more than twenty pipits, scattered singly around the town and in flocks of up to five.


This prairie falcon was messing around with a chunk of cow pie.

Watch out for these guys, they are moving to the winter dens in the prairie dog town. I saw six today.

I went back on Sept. 8 and took some more photos. There were still lots of pipits in the area. See below:
