American Three-toed Woodpecker, Ward Draw, near Hanna Camp Ground in Spearfish Canyon
December 12, 2003

Thanks to George Prisbe for showing me the tree this woodpecker was frequenting!

The first photo gives a good view of the three toes this species is named for, most woodpeckers have four toes, two in front and two in back. This is a male, only the male has the yellow crown. The American Three-toed Woodpecker is almost always found in spruce forest.
