American Three-toed Woodpecker, Ward Draw,
near Hanna Camp Ground in Spearfish Canyon The first photo gives a good view of the
three toes this species is named for, most woodpeckers have four toes, two in
front and two in back. This is a male, only the male has the yellow crown. The
American Three-toed Woodpecker is almost always found in spruce forest.
