Photos from trip to the North Cave Hills and Slim Buttes, Custer National Forest, Harding County, SD

Memorial Day Weekend 2005

Photos by Doug Backlund, Canon 20D, most with Canon 300 mm and 1.4 extender.

Violet-green Swallow

My favorite photo of the trip. I sat on a rock ledge on a high sandstone cliff for quite a while waiting for this chance.

American Redstart

Common in deciduous thickets and woody draws

Adult Golden Eagle

There are quite a few golden eagle nests in the Custer National Forest.

Audubon's Warbler

A common nesting bird of the pine forests

Lazuli Bunting

Common in thickets and woody draws

Least Flycatcher

Common, we found one nest.

Ovenbird

Common in ponderosa pine with deciduous understory

Common Poorwill

We hunted hard to find one on the ground. Charlie finally found this one, on a nest near a male that we flushed earlier.

Common Poorwill

Front view of the same bird.

Prairie Falcon

Nesting on the high cliffs of sandstone

Red-breasted Nuthatch

This pair was busily excavating a nest hole in a small pine stump.

Northern Saw-whet Owl

Kenny and Charlie Miller showed us this nest box with an active Northern Saw-whet Owl nest.

Least Chipmunk

The pale subspecies of the least chipmunk, Tamias minimus pallidus. Much lighter in color than the chipmunks found in the Black Hills and also much warier. This guy did not want me looking at him.

Golden Eagle Nest

This nest was in a pine tree at eye level from a cliff. Breakfast was being served.

Mountain Bluebird

Common and several nests were seen.
